Mountain Equipment Co-op, in partnership with Banff Snow Days, is pleased to announce that the festival formerly known as Knucklebasher is back, and better than ever. The MEC Ice Climbing Festival will be held over 3 days this year, and for the first time, in the heart of Banff. Try ice climbing, check out the latest gear, take a skills clinic, or enter the ice climbing competition. All ages and skill levels can participate! Join us for Western Canada's premier ice climbing festival.

Want to test your skills? Enter the ACC evening Ice Climbing Competition! Available for all skill levels, including a youth category. The format of this competition is a timed speed trial, judged by a panel of local climbers.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three adults and youth. There are additional prizes for best costume so have fun and dress up!

Registration is free and will be available online.

 

 


CASA Speaker Evening and Silent Auction

The best climber party in town! The Climbers Access Society of Alberta presents their annual speaker evening and silent auction on Friday January 31, from 7:00pm - 9:00pm. Tickets are $10 with all proceeds going to the CASA (available online here http://climbersaccess.ab.ca/ and at the Elk and Oarsman).

Speakers:

Nancy Hansen is the first woman to climb all 54 peaks over 11,000 ft in the Canadian Rockies. She is currently working on climbing all of the routes listed in the iconic 1979 guidebook Fifty Classic Climbs of North America, and has completed 46 of the routes so far.

Brent Peters is a local ACMG guide. Brent recently published Ice Lines: Select Waterfalls of the Canadian Rockies; the only ice climbing guide book currently in print for the Bow Valley region.

 

Auction:

This popular silent auction is an annual treat! Bid on a wide variety of gear and prizes from ice tools to hut trips. Auction begins at 7:00 with the winners announced at 8:30pm. All proceeds go towards CASA.

The Elk and Oarsman is a licensed pub, ages 18 + only.

Check out the 40 foot free standing ice wall in the middle of down town Banff. This is the hub of the festival, and a meeting place for all sorts of activities

Festival Schedule


Free Ice Climbing Trials

Try ice climbing for free on the Ice wall in downtown Banff. All levels of experience are welcome to give it a try, ages 8 and up. technical equipment and belayers are provided, please be sure to wear warm, water resistant clothing and gloves. Climbs available on a first come first served basis. Come early to take a number and check out the tradeshow while you wait.

Belayers are provided by the Climbers Access Society of Alberta. If you would like to support CASA as they work to rebuild access to the Ghost Wilderness Region there will be a donation box at the base of the ice climbing wall.

Tool Maintenance with Rob Owens

Saturday Feb 1st, 2pm-3pm, registration required

Learn to sharpen and maintain your ice tools, crampons and screws in this hour long clinic sponsored by Petzl.

Ice Screw Placement with Margo Talbot

Saturday Feb 1st, 3pm-4pm, regisration required

Learn about proper ice screw placement and technique then practice on ice with local climbing legend Margo Talbot.


Sunday

Ice Climbing Clinics

Yamnuska Mountain Adventures is providing a variety of clinics for all skills levels. All clinics are taught by ACMG certified guides within the Bow Valley region. Clinic participants receive a free ticket to the CASA speaker evening and silent auction on Friday January 31st.

2 Hour Beginner Clinics: $50

New to Ice Climbing and want to try it out? Take a two hour beginner clinic on the Banff Ice Wall. This year, for the first time, the MEC Ice Climbing Festival is offering a womens specific clinic. Half Day Beginner Clinics: $80

New to Ice Climbing and want to get out into the mountains? The clinic will take you to a safe beginner ice climbing area to learn the basics on waterfal ice. This clinic will focus on safety, movement and basic technique. All technical ice gear is provided, please bring warm clothing and adequate water and snacks for the day. Full Day Advanced/Intermediate Clinic: $155

Looking to hone your skills? This clinic will focus on advanced rope systems, especially on anchor construction and placing protection. It will also introduce lead-climbing tactics along with coaching on steep ice climbing techniques. All technical gear is provided, please bring warm clothing and adequate water and snacks for the day. Dry Land Clinics

Broaden your knowledge with MEC "dry land" clinics on avalanche awareness, choosing the right gear, and the best ice routes in the Canadian Rockies. Schedule TBA
